Kids Area

The part of the website designed specifically for kids, giving you tips and advice for the internet.

School On the INTERNET???

The internet can be used for fun, but there are also great websites to help with your school work as well. Perhaps you are stuck with some homework, or perhaps there was something you learnt about today at school that you want to know more about. Why not use GCSE Bitesize or the BBC Schools section to bolster your knowledge.

Chatting Tips

This is not the part where we tell you “don’t go on chat rooms because the adults say so”, but simply warn you of the dangers and give you advice to help avoid those dangers if you do decide to visit them.

  1. Don’t talk to strangers.Everyone knows this rule, and usually has the image of the scary man offering sweets from his car window, but it never seems to apply to people your own age, such as those in your class at school. But in chat rooms, it is all too easy for someone to disguise themselves. The information put in is the information shown, and we all know how easy it is to put in false information, meaning that Emily, aged 10, could really be that scary man offering sweets.
  2. Don’t give out personal information.Be careful what you write about, even to close friends. Chat rooms are very public, and you never know who else is watching. If you’ve given out your address, and the fact that you are on holiday next week, burglars have just discovered two of the most important things they need to know: where and when there is an empty house.

Health Information

There is also a range of health information for you to find online, but it is about finding the right source for you. A child is much more likely to learn from something like the BBC health section related specifically to kids than something aimed more at adults. But, whether you are hoping to find out information about toothpaste and mouthwash or you have a rash and want to find out more information about it, the internet can be a great resource… as long as you use it correctly.
